How Do We Love Like Jesus?

John 13:35

If we love like Jesus it will be messy, it will be hard, and it will be full of joy. To love others like Jesus, we have to act like him. How do we model truth and love like Jesus did?

Let's read together.

Read

35 "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

Some key statements and questions put forward that are important for us to talk about…

Examine

"By this all people will know..."

  • Our actions dictate what we believe.
  • What do your actions tell people about who you are?

"You are my disciples,"

  • Do you consider yourself a disciple of Jesus?
  • Why do you think people knowing you are a disciple of Jesus matters?

“If you have love for one another."

  • How would you define the love of Jesus?
  • In what ways is his love different than the way we love?
  • Why do you think discipleship is tethered to love instead of something like knowledge or justice?

Apply

"Are you more like a unicorn or more like Iron Man?" Do we love people without truth, or feel more responsible to tell the truth than love them? Which way do you lean?

“Do you struggle with being judgmental?” Why do you think this is an issue for you? Do you feel tethered to the Spirit? Can you tell when you are and are not led by the Spirit?

"Do you believe that we are in the middle of a spiritual battle?" Or do you tend to make people the enemy instead of making the enemy the enemy?"

Act

The Holy Spirit convicts. Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you of sin that may be keeping you from loving someone specific in your life.

The Holy Spirit forgives. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you forgive someone who needs forgiving in your life.

The Holy Spirit helps us love. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to those who need the love of Jesus in your life.

Amen.
